At Just Breathe by Jodi, we often talk about the importance of physical release—how a targeted massage or a soothing facial can reset your nervous system. But today, in honor of World Book Day, I want to talk about a different kind of relaxation: the mental exhale that happens when you open a book.
We live in a world of constant pings, notifications, and “to-do” lists. Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is simply be still. While my hands are here to help you find that stillness in the studio, books are the tools you can take home to maintain it.
Reading as a “Mental Massage”
Did you know that research shows reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by up to 68%? It lowers your heart rate and eases muscle tension faster than many other relaxation methods. In a way, a good book is like a session on my table—it allows your mind to drift, your breathing to steady, and your focus to shift from the external noise to an internal peace.
Jodi’s World Book Day “Reading Nook” Ritual
To celebrate today, I encourage you to create a “Just Breathe” moment at home. Here is how to turn your reading time into a full-sensory wellness ritual:
- Set the Atmosphere: Light a 5-wick candle (I love the warm, earthy scent of Umber) or diffuse some lavender oil to signal to your brain that it’s time to downshift.
- Find Your “Play-Zone”: Much like I love disconnecting on the floor to play with my son, find a cozy spot that isn’t your work desk. A soft chair, a porch swing, or even a pile of cushions.
- Hydrate and Heal: Pour a glass of your favorite natural wine or a warm herbal tea.
- The “No-Phone” Rule: Put your phone in another room. This is your time to disconnect from the “to-dos” and just live in the pages.
What’s on my Pedestal?
In the spirit of sharing stories, here are a few books that have helped me find my “breath” lately:
- For Inspiration: The Expat Activity Book (A personal favorite for anyone navigating big life shifts—reminding you how capable you truly are).
- For Mindfulness: Anything that encourages you to slow down and appreciate the “daylight savings” moments of life.
- For Education: Books on holistic healing and the fascinating world of Terahertz frequency (I’m always a student at heart!).
A World Book Day Challenge
Today, I invite you to take ten minutes. Not for a chore, not for a workout, but for a chapter. Let the words help you do exactly what our name suggests: Just Breathe.
